Researcher

About the position

A Research Fellowship (SKO 1109) in history is available at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History (IAKH), University of Oslo. The position is associated with DETHREAT: Deterring Threats in the New Nuclear Age, a project funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Defense and led by Associate Professor James Cameron as the Principal Investigator.

The project’s aim is to use game theory to elaborate the mechanisms by which different geopolitical conditions and technologies could hypothetically increase the risk of nuclear-backed aggression and/or nuclear escalation. The project is looking for a researcher with expertise in game-theoretical methods, with a strong understanding of the latest research on nuclear strategy and ideally with insight into Norwegian defense policy. The candidate must be able to apply game theory as an analytical tool to understand how emerging technologies and new geopolitical conditions could affect interactions between states in nuclear crises (where both/all parties possess nuclear weapons), or nuclear-backed confrontations (where not all parties possessnuclear weapons). It is crucial that the candidate can build game-theoretical models, justify assumptions within these models, and use them to uncover potential inconsistencies in accepted wisdom on the above topics.

DETHREAT aims to maximize its academic, policy and public impact, including at least three published academic articles, three policy papers and regular public outreach in Norway and internationally. The researcher on the project will play a vital role in reaching these milestones.

The person appointed to the position will be affiliated with the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History (IAKH), University of Oslo, is expected to be based in Oslo for the duration of the fellowship, and to take an active part in all the project’s activities.

The appointment is for a period of three years.
