The position
At the Norwegian Center for the Law of the Sea at the Faculty of Law a position is available for a researcher.
NCLOS is a UiT Aurora Centre (2021-2025), a funding program of research groups that demonstrate excellence in their field of science. The Centre has a staff of 20 – 25 employees: academic staff and PhD students.
The Centre is located at the Faculty of Law, providing for close contact and collaboration between the staff. The Centre also has an extensive national and international academic network. The Centre is part of the Faculty of Law, which has about 950 law students, 25 PhD students, 35 members of the academic staff and 18 members of the administrative staff. The Faculty may award the degrees of Master and PhD in Law as well as the degrees of Master of Laws (LL.M.) in the Law of the Sea and Joint Nordic Master`s Programme in Environmental Law.
The position is a fixed term position for a duration of two years. Appointment to the position of Researcher is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. The applicant must hold a PhD in law and must be able to carry out the project over the full course of the employment period.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.
If you receive a personal overseas research grant from NFR, you can apply to the NFR for an extension of your fellowship period. This extension can correspond to the duration of your stay abroad, with a minimum three months and a maximum of 12 months.
The position’s field of research or work
NCLOS seeks to fill one researcher position to contribute to the NCLOS Aurora research program. The objective of the program is to identify the limits and possibilities of the current law of the sea and ocean governance framework to adapt and respond to global environmental crises, geopolitical shifts and the challenges of new ecological knowledges.
The researcher is expected to undertake research within one of the following broad themes: Ocean (and) Space; Oceans and Sovereignty; Ocean Commons; Arctic Marine Environmental Law and Governance. For further details on each of the Aurora research themes please see this website.

Qualifications
Good English Language skills are required. Skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language are considered an advantage.

Qualification requirements for the position as Researcher:
- The applicant must hold a PhD in law.

Work- and salary conditions
The successful candidate must be willing to get involved in the ongoing development of their department and the university as a whole.
The allocation of working hours is flexible and allocated on a case-by-case basis. As a norm, the time resources spent on administrative duties constitutes 5 % for academic staff.
The remuneration for Researcher is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1109.

Applicants must submit a brief research proposal (max 5 pages) that outlines ideas aligned with one or more of these research themes. The research proposal however remains indicative, and if selected for employment applicants must be willing to adjust or re-orient her/his research plans. A more detailed plan, inline with concrete research needs of NCLOS, will be discussed in outline during interviews with shortlisted candidates.

- Description of your academic production, stating which works you consider most important
- Academic works, up to ten. The doctoral thesis is regarded as one work.
- Documentation of English proficiency.
Proficiency in the English language can be documented in the following ways:
- Diploma from a Norwegian upper secondary school with both spoken and written English (140 hours)
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
- IELTS (International English Testing Service)
- Completed university degree in the field of English language or literature
- One year of completed university studies in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or USA, for which English was the language of instructions.

Assessment
The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications on the basis of the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailde description draw up for the position.
The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview shall among other things, aim to clarify the applicants personal suitability for the position and motivations. A trial lecture may also be held.
