Researcher in fluvial to marginal marine sedimentology and depositional architecture

About the position

Researcher in fluvial to marginal marine sedimentology and depositional architecture

A Research position in fluvial to marginal marine sedimentology is available at the Department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo (UiO)

The fellowship period is 3 years

Knowledge development in a changing world – Science and technology towards 2030

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

Job description/project description:

We invite applications for a research position to study how qualitative and quantitative analysis of stratigraphic data from the alluvial to marginal marine transition can constrain resultant stratigraphic architecture. Integration of data from outcrop, cores and seismic will be used to establish depositional models for a spectrum of discharge regimes and proximity to standing ocean basins. The researcher will be attached to the Tectonostratigraphic Research Group at the section for basin studies, utilising and contributing to the broad expertise in the group.

The Research fellow will be a part of project ALMATRA – ALluvial to MArine TRAnsition (ALMATRA): a refinement of sedimentary architecture in the distal fluvial to proximal marine environment. The project is funded by a Norwegian energy company and its participants will work in collaboration with partners from universities in Spain, USA and Italy as well as industry. The Research fellow will be integrated in a multidisciplinary team of early-career scientists dedicated to study the sedimentological and structural dynamics of sedimentary basins.

The research fellow will:

  • Plan and lead field field-campaigns in Spain, Italy, USA
  • Plan and execute core-descriptions and analyses in facilities in Norway
  • Conduct detailed sedimentological descriptions and analyses of fluvial to marginal marine successions
  • Implement advanced analyses of sedimentary strata
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team with expertise in a broad spectrum of sedimentology and basin dynamics

Qualification requirements:

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

To qualify for the position, you must have:

  • A PhD degree or equivalent in Earth Sciences, and have conducted research after the completion of your PhD
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Good social and collaboration skills and ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary scientific environment
  • A strong scientific record in the sedimentology of fluvial to marginal marine depositional systems
  • Be able to take the scientific lead and be self-driven to advance with the research project

Personal skills:

Applicants must hold a PhD degree in Earth Sciences with expertise in sedimentology, preferably with a demonstrated integration of qualitative and quantitative data from outcrop, modern environments and cored well-material.

The following competences are required:

  • Sedimentology
  •  Geological fieldwork in modern and ancient strata
  •  Experience in the fluvial to marginal marine transition zone
  • A valid driver’s licence
  •  Eligibility to travel within Europe and north America

Desired skills:

  • Teaching experience from field and classroom
  • Drone pilot license and experience from drone-model analyses
  • Fieldwork experience in remote areas

The purpose of the fellowship is research and research training leading to the successful completion of the project.

We offer:

  • Salary NOK 575 400 – 720 100 per annum depending on qualifications and seniority as Researcher (position code 1109)
  • Attractive welfare benefits and a generous pension agreement
  • Vibrant and diverse interdisciplinary academic team
  • International academic environment
  • Career development programmes
  • Oslo’s family-friendly surroundings with their rich opportunities for culture and outdoor activities

The application must include:

  • Cover letter including a statement of motivation and research interests (max 2 pages)
  • CV (summarizing education, positions and academic work – scientific publications)
  • Copies of educational certificates and transcripts of records
  • A complete publication list
  • Names and contact details of 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and telephone number)

The application with attachments must be delivered in our electronic recruiting system (please follow the link “Apply for this job”). Please note that all documents should be in English or a Scandinavian language.

Applicants may be called in for an interview.
