About the Job
The goal of the PopEye project is to develop algorithms for biometrics-based identity verification and identification in secure access control. The main task of NTNU/IDI is to develop computer vision algorithms for identity verification using but not limited to iris. Depending on the skills of the candidate, different aspects of the project may be emphasized, for instance by focusing on:
- Unsupervised computer vision algorithms for biometric applications.
- Subspace and kernel-based methods for recognition and classification tasks and presentation attack detection.
- Domain adaptation approaches for visible to NIR iris recognition.
- Development of quality assessment algorithms iris recognition.
The appointment is for a term of 18 months and sponsored by the European Horizon Research project PopEye. Thus, an active contribution to reach the PopEye objectives is expected.
The research will be carried out as joint research at the Norwegian Biometrics Laboratory – NBL and the Department of Computer Science under guidance of Dr. Kiran Raja and Prof. Dr. Christoph Busch.
You will report to the head of Colourlab.
Duties of the position
- Develop computer vision, machine learning and pattern recognition algorithms for various tasks in biometrics (e.g., verification, attack detection, privacy protection).
- Develop new generation capture sensors for at-a-distance capture.
- Develop robust presentation attack detection algorithms for iris and face images in supervised and unsupervised capture settings.
- Write reports and scientific papers on the findings and the developed system.
- Participate in project meetings and dissemination activities.
- Technical contributions to International Standards (ISO/IEC) on iris recognition.
Required selection criteria
- You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD in Computer Science, with a focus on Computer Vision and Machine Learning.
- If you can document that the PhD thesis has been submitted, your application can be assessed even if you have not yet defended your dissertation. Documentation of the obtained doctoral degree must be presented before you can take up the position.
- Documented research experience and scientific publication showing experience with machine learning, computer vision and pattern recognition.
- Good collaboration and communication skills.
- Excellent written and oral proficiency in English.
Preferred selection criteria
- Extensive knowledge in unsupervised machine learning, tensor algebra and Graph Neural Networks through documented publications.
- Knowledge of human activity and motion analysis will be beneficial for this position due to project requirements.
- Experience with developing and operating new capture sensors for long range image capture.
- Experience with supervision of MSc students’ thesis work.

Salary and conditions
The gross salary for the position of researcher (code 1109) is normally remunerated at gross NOK 594 500 before tax per year. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The appointment is for a term of 18 months and sponsored by the European Horizon Research project PopEye.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU
The position is subject to external funding.
It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
