PhD-position at the Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care

PhD position

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care, a full-time PhD-position is available in the Health Economics, Leadership, and Transformative Ethics- Research Group (HELTER) for a period of three (3) years. The position is part of the project “Health Economics for Policy Impact” (HEPI), funded by Horizon Europe. About the project/work tasks:

PhD-related tasks

  • Project Design and Planning: Develop and refine the PhD project scope, including objectives, methodology, and detailed plans for data collection and analysis.
  • Data Collection and Quality Control: Plan and conduct fieldwork and data collection, ensuring adherence to quality standards and research protocols.
  • Data Analysis: Execute planned analyses, interpreting results to address research questions and advance project objectives.
  • Manuscript Preparation: Draft and revise scientific manuscripts based on findings, targeting publication in peer-reviewed journals and dissemination of results within partner networks.
  • Thesis Writing: Compile research outcomes and manuscripts into a cohesive doctoral thesis, adhering to academic standards and submission timelines.

HEPI Project Support

  • Project Execution and Outreach: Assist with wider project tasks relevant to the PhD work, including regular collaboration, organization support, meeting preparation, and media outreach to enhance project visibility and impact.
  • Represent HEPI within the HELTER Research Group: Contribute to routine HELTER research group activities relevant to the PhD work, and ensure the visibility of HEPI and the PhD work, specifically, within the group and in its outreach.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

The applicant must have a master's degree or equivalent in the field of medicine or social sciences (i.e. political science, development studies or health economics) or a related discipline, or be in the process of completing their master's studies with a planned graduation date before the specified start date for the position. Employment is contingent upon the completion and passing of the master's degree (minimum grade C). No extensions to the start date will be granted due to delays in completing the master's degree.

  • The applicant is required to document that the degree corresponds to the profile of the advertised position.
  • We are especially interested in people whose academic area of interest include implementation research, global public health, and/or political science and social sciences with focus on gender topics.
  • Experience from relevant work in comparable research projects or groups working in related fields, or research of policy processes in global health will be considered positive.
  • The candidate should be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to comfortably cooperate interculturally.
  • The applicant should have the ability and motivation to carry out a PhD project that includes international travels and field work in project countries.
  • It is a requirement that the candidate will be based in Bergen, Norway and contributes to the daily working life at the department during the PhD period.
  • The applicant must be fluent in spoken and written English, see documentation requirements.
  • Being fluent in Norwegian is an advantage, see documentation requirements.
  • Documented oral and written proficiency in another official language spoken in the project region will be considered positive, see documentation requirements.

The applicant’s personal suitability for the position is a significant factor in the evaluation.

An applicant whose education is from another country than Norway, needs to also attach a certified translation of the diploma and transcript of grades to English or a Scandinavian language, if the original is not in any of these languages. It is also required that the applicant enclose a review from the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir) whether the education (bachelor and master degree) in question is of a scope and level that corresponds to the level of a Norwegian master’s degree. About the PhD position:

Organized research training (PhD program):

The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years.

Admission to the organized research training (PhD programme) at the Faculty is essential for this position.

Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan, must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.

The PhD-position:

PhD-positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or have had similar employment at an institution in the region.

  • Salary NOK 540 500 (code 1017, pay grade 55) in the state salary scale. For applicants with at least one year of employment in a position as a General Practitioner or Dentist, salary NOK 557 100 (code 1017, pay grade 57). Medical specialist starts on salary NOK 575 400 (code 1017, pay grade 59).
  • Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
  • Good welfare benefits.

  • A brief account of the applicant`s research interests and motivation for applying for the position.
  • A project description is required, where the applicant spells out the background and objectives, proposed theoretical framework and/or methodological approach(es), as well as a progress plan for their proposed PhD project. Not exceeding 2000 words without references, this proposed PhD description should build on the HEPI infrastructure and integrate its partner network. The overall aim should align with HEPI’s expected impact.
