About the job
For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.
We are looking to recruit a full-time doctoral (PhD) candidate for three years researching digital tracking and tracing solutions for wood-based materials in the circular built environment. The work place is in Gjøvik city, Norway, at NTNU’s Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering.
About the position
The Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering at NTNU in Gjøvik seeks a PhD candidate to work in the field of circular economy and wood-based construction. The positions aim to optimize circular value chains for wood-based materials by promoting sustainable wood use and ensuring transparent material tracking and optimisation of reverse logistics. The position are within the Horizon Europe funded project CIRCULess (https://circuless-project.eu/), a project that is seeking to improve sustainability, traceability, and efficiency in the circular built environment and meet the demand for recyclable materials by implementing a circular economy in the wood-based construction industry. The goal is for the candidates to obtain a doctoral degree and improve circularity in the wood-based construction industry. The duration of a PhD position is three years.
The Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering develops innovative and sustainable solutions for the society. The Department is divided into two subject groups, each with its research fields and involved in interdisciplinary research collaboration. The positions will be part of the department's subject group for the Built Environment and Geomatics and the research group focused on studying Digital Twins for a sustainable built environment. Currently, the group has several national and EU projects on the circular built environment, with several PhD candidates and Postdoctoral Researchers. The group has built a solid national and international network. Thus, the candidates will become part of an active research environment throughout the duration of the project.
Your immediate leader is Head of Department.
Duties of the position
- Conduct high-quality research on digital twin for a circular built environment.
- Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to develop circular wood value chain optimization through digital technologies.
In this PhD project, the focus will be on digital tracking and tracing of building elements within closed-loop value chain perspective.
Required selection criteria
- You must have a professionally relevant background in civil engineering, architecture, computer science, or geomatics.
- Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level in engineering.
- You must have experience with BIM, GIS and data analytics.
- You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.

- Proficiency in written and spoken English is a prerequisite. The candidate is expected to be fluent in both written and oral English.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant
Preferred selection criteria
- An interest in circular construction, and/or construction processes.
- Experience with Unreal Engine (UE), and blockchain.
- Experience with digital product passport and/or reverse logistics.

Salary and conditions
As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 years.
Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
Applicants from high-risk country will be in conflict with the export control in this position and will therefore not be selected for this position.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
