About the job

3-year PhD position within Reservoir Engineering focusing on how the interactions between oil components and mineral surfaces determine the wettability in reservoir rock.

We have a vacancy for a 3-year PhD position within Reservoir Engineering focusing on how the interactions between oil components and mineral surfaces determine the wettability in reservoir rock, at the Department of Geosciences at NTNU within the group Well and Reservoir. The position is funded by the Research Council of Norway and two oil companies. For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree. The position is organised at the Department of Geoscience. The research will be performed in co-operation with SINTEF Industry and the University of Eastern Finland.

The latest startup date is February 2025.

The position reports to the head of the department.

Duties of the position

  • The main objective is to employ advanced mass spectrometric techniques to develop test protocols that can characterise and reduce the uncertainty of the traditional wettability preservation and restoration methods of special core analysis (SCAL)
  • Develop an improved understanding of how wettability is affected by adsorption of minority oil components and possibly chemicals in drilling fluids.
  • Minority oil components in oil and adsorbed on rock surfaces will be determined by advanced mass spectrometric techniques that can identify components by molecular weight and element formula
  • The research will be done using existing and/or newly developed experimental methods supported by respectively numerical, analytical and/or modelling tools

Required selection criteria

  • You must have a relevant background in reservoir technology, analytical chemistry, surface chemistry or related disciplines
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale.
