Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department.
About the project
Non-contact manipulation of micro- and nano-size particles plays a leading role in diverse biomedical applications. Many of these applications require to perform several operations on particles and flow such as sorting, separation, isolation, rotation, transport, stretching, stimulation and lysis, of micro-organisms such as cells and biomolecules.
This project focuses on the application of acoustic fields for controlling the flow and the interaction of the flow with micro and nano-size particles. The aim is to develop acoustic operators with the fluid and particles for trapping, transport, and lysis of nano- and micro-size synthetic and biological organisms.
The project involves (i) the design and construction of acoustofluidics devices in a cleanroom, (ii) the design, construction and running of experiments with nano- and micro-size synthetic and biological organisms like cells and exosomes, (iii) running diverse types of studies involving micro-PIV, IR-thermography, holographic and fluorescence microscopy, cell culture, (iv) modeling of the physics of the processes.
Duties of the position
- Complete the doctoral education until obtaining a doctorate
- Design and fabrication of engineered surfaces and devices in the clean room
- Design, planning and running experiments
- Use and development of novel visualization techniques (micro-PIV, infrared thermography, holographic and fluorescence microscopy)
- Running experiments with synthetic particles and biological samples
- Contribute to academic publications, project reports and other dissemination activities
- Participate in meetings with supervisors and colleagues
Be prepared for changes to your work duties after employment.
Required selection criteria
- You must have an academically relevant background within Engineering.
- You must have a Master's degree in bioengineering, physics, applied science, nanobiotechnology, nanotechnology, mechanical engineering or equivalent. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master's level. Master's students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position.
- You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master's degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
- You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's Doctoral Programme (https://www.ntnu.edu/iv/doctoral-programme).
Specific requirements for the proposed project:
- You must have an academically relevant background within either bio engineering, biomedical engineers, nanobiotechnology, nanotechnology, experimental micro scale fluid mechanics or physics, demonstrated through courses, projects, activities, and/or theses.
- Programming experience in Matlab, Python or similar packages.
- Good oral and written presentation skills in English language.
