Associate Professor in Business Economics – Taxation

About the position

NHH in Bergen, Norway, invites applications for a position as associate professor in business economics with a specialisation in taxation at the Department of Business and Management Science.

The Department of Business and Management Science has high ambitions in terms of research and offers a stimulating work environment. The department delivers teaching and supervision in NHH’s programs at the bachelor’s, master’s and PhD levels, as well as executive programs. The main activities are organised in five broad research areas: i) Managerial Economics and Business Strategy ii) Business Taxation iii) Asset Management and Risk Analysis iv) Energy Markets, Resource Management and Sustainability v) Shipping, Logistics and Operations Management. The department is multi-disciplinary, and the research covers both empirical and theoretical inquiries. For more information, please consult our webpage

The department is seeking ambitious candidates early in their careers who can document relevant research and teaching capabilities. The department aims to strengthen its capacity in taxation and multinational corporations.

The position is affiliated with the Norwegian Center for Taxation (NoCeT). Relevant research topics at the center include the taxation of dividends, profits and wealth, tax accounting, taxation of multinational corporations, tax transparency, international tax agreements, tax planning, tax evasion, and more generally how the tax system affects resource allocation, productivity and sustainability.

A demonstrated ability to win research grants, cooperate with external partners, manage research projects and disseminate research results will be emphasised. The ability to combine tax research with topics of relevance for other research areas in the department will also be emphasised. Supplementary competence in analytics, consulting and management control is of particular interest.

Applicants must have a PhD degree from a recognised business school or university and must demonstrate high quality in both research and teaching. Research quality will be evaluated based on publications in well-recognised international journals and research potential through a pipeline of working papers. In the assessment of applicants, international experience in general, and familiarity with the ENGAGE.EU network, in particular, will be weighted positively.

The candidate appointed to the position must be able to teach courses such as FIE441 Taxes and Business Strategy, FOR11 Business Taxation, BUS465 Detecting Corporate Crime and FIE432E Personal Finance and Taxation. The ideal candidate can also teach broad introductory courses such as BUS400E Management Control and BUS444E Econometrics for Business Research. The ability to contribute to the development of new executive courses in the areas of taxation and analytics will also be valued.

Teaching quality and the ability to engage large classes is an important criterion. This will be evaluated through documented evidence of previous teaching experience in a recognised academic program, interaction with students and student evaluations.

The position involves teaching on average two courses per year as well as some graduate supervision. Candidates who cannot document at least 200 hours of pedagogical coursework when hired, must complete the NHH program on basic pedagogical competence within two years.

NHH is a one campus business school, and the place of work is Bergen. The candidate appointed to the position is expected to interact and cooperate on research with colleagues, attend faculty seminars, take part in recruitment processes, and other activities that aim to strengthen the research and social environment at NHH and the department.

NHH needs to improve its gender balance. In the event of equivalent qualifications, female applicants will be given preference.

NHH offers

  • a competitive salary that is negotiable within the state salary scale. The salary will depend both on the level of competence and length of service. External research grants and teaching in executive programs may offer exceptional candidates opportunities for supplementing the base salary
  • a favorable membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (SPK) and good welfare benefits such as parental leave
  • research funds for traveling and conference participation and a bonus system for publication in top international journals (up to NOK 200 000)
