Job Description
Published 18-03-2025
Deadline: 27-04-2025
Researcher affiliated with the Hylleraas Centre for Quantum Molecular Sciences
The position
The Department of Chemistry has 2-3 researcher positions vacant. The positions are affiliated with the Hylleraas Centre for Quantum Molecular Sciences.
Each researcher position is a fixed term position for a period of two years, and the successful candidates will work under the supervision of one of the Principal Investigators at the Hylleraas centre in Tromsø.
The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position in Tromsø within a reasonable time after receiving an offer.
The position's affiliation
The Department of Chemistry at UiT The arctic University of Norway is co-host for the Hylleraas Centre for Quantum Molecular Sciences, a national Centre of Excellence. You will be a member of the Hylleraas Centre for Quantum Molecular Sciences, which is financed by the Norwegian Research Council. The Hylleraas Centre is shared between Tromsø and Oslo and hosts more than 60 researchers (PhD students, Postdocs, Senior researchers).
The position's field of research
The Hylleraas Centre is a research centre with nodes in both Tromsø and Oslo and hosts a wide range of activities categorized over different research themes (RTs):
- RT1: Molecular Quantum Mechanics
RT1 concerns the application of quantum mechanics to molecules. In Tromsø, this theme is primarily represented by research concerning multiwavelet approaches to describe electronic structure and molecular properties.
- RT2/6: Multiscale modelling and biological systems
RT2 develops and applies methodologies for the description of molecular systems and their environment at different levels of detail and characteristic size – particularly for macromolecular systems of biological relevance – and seek to usefully combine and apply them to achieve accurate computational results at reasonable computational cost In Tromsø, this mostly concerns research on cold adaptation of enzymes and drug discovery and design.
- RT3/4: Matter-Field interactions
RT3/4 deals with the effects that take place when a molecular system is subjected to external perturbations, primarily in the form of external electromagnetic fields of differing energies and strength regimes. In Tromsø, this theme is represented by research focused on developing both nonrelativistic and relativistic electronic structure methods for the calculation of molecular properties by frequency- and time-domain response
- RT5: Chemical transformations
RT5 applies computational chemistry methods on the study of reactivity and chemical transformations, to understand how reactions work, predict unknown reactivity, improve catalytic processes. - RT7: Machine learning and mathematical methods
RT7 combines computational chemistry with artificial intelligence and machine learning to impact the way chemical research is being performed. This helps us to navigate the vastness of chemical space to obtain e.g. faster catalysts, better material properties, more effective drugs. - RT0: Hylleraas software platform
The goal of RT0 is to make use of the full potential of the computational methodologies developed at the Hylleraas Centre, by providing a platform to use then together in a much more efficient way.
Based on individual skills, competence, background, and personal preferences, successful applicants will be offered a position focused on one or more of the Hylleraas RTs and aligned with the research activities and goals in which the Tromsø node of the Hylleraas Centre is involved.
The activity concerning RT5 and RT7 is currently represented to a minor extent in Tromsø, but we will still consider candidates, if their background is suitable for research activity which involves the other RTs (RT1, RT2/6, RT3/4 and RT0).
Contact
Further information about the position is available by contacting Professor Luca Frediani, telephone +47 47 323 585, E-mail: luca.frediani@uit.no.
Qualification requirements
To qualify for the position, you we will require a Norwegian doctoral degree, or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognised as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in one of the following disciplines: theoretical/computational chemistry or physics, computational materials science, molecular physics, condensed matter physics, applied mathematics or another field closely related to one or more of the Hylleraas RTs.
Fluency in English is required.
Additionally, one or more of the following qualifications will be considered positively, depending on the specific Research Theme.
- Previous programming experience (C++, Python or Fortran are the most relevant languages).
- Experience with modern coding workflow, and in particular revision control, and code testing.
- Previous experience with method development in theoretical chemistry/physics or computational physics/materials science.
- Experience with application of quantum chemistry methods for the study of chemical reactions or molecular properties
- Documented experience of work as well as the ability to work in a team.
At UiT we put emphasis on the quality, relevance and significance of the research work and not on where the work is published, in accordance withthe principles of The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA).
Application
The application must include:

- Two references with contact details
- Documentation of English profiency. Nordic applicants can document their capabilities by attaching their high school diploma.
- A list of your academic production
- Description of your academic production, stating which works you consider most important
- Academic works, up to ten. The doctoral thesis is regarded as one work.
Documentation has to be in English or a Scandinavian language. The application and submitteddocuments must be sent electronically via www.jobbnorge.no
