PhD Research Fellow in Management
About the position
USN School of Business has a 100 % position vacancy as a PhD Research Fellow in Management. In this PhD project the successful candidate will be able to investigate how different work-related factors relate to employee motivation, performance, and work-related health.
Commencement date is 01.09.2025 or after agreement and the appointment is for a term of four years with 25% work obligation. A premise for employment that the PhD Research Fellow is enrolled in USN’s PhD program in Management within three months of accession in the position.
The position is in the Department of Business, Marketing, and Law, and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Campus Hønefoss.
About the PhD-project
The PhD position is in the research group Work Motivation and Optimal Functioning at USN School of Business, under the supervision of Professor Anja H. Olafsen. The group has an extensive research portfolio on work motivation, occupational health, and employee well-being.
The PhD project will investigate how different work-related factors—such as compensation, job design, leadership, and organizational practices—relate to employee motivation, performance, and work-related health.
The candidate recruited for this position will work with an international team of researchers in designing and implementing studies to examine key mechanisms underlying motivation and occupational outcomes. For example, a relevant topic could be how do different forms of compensation, such as performance-based pay or fixed salaries, influence employees’ motivation and well-being.
The applicant must be familiar with theoretical perspectives within organizational psychology and/or management and relevant research methods (particularly quantitative methods).
Qualifications
- Master of Science (120 ECTS) in marketing, business, management, or equivalent with a documented command of research methodology and an average grade of B or higher.
- The degree must be accomplished before commencement date.
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
- For applicants from outside Nordic countries we require a valid documentation of English proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS)
- For applicants who has a higher education outside Europe we require a valid documentation of GMAT or GRE scores.
- The GMAT results must be of a minimum of 600 points or GRE equivalent
- For applicants from outside Nordic countries, we require that you write and speak Norwegian equivalent to level A2.
- If you do not have this competence you must acquire this within three years after commencement date.
- The candidate must be able to work independently and be motivated to share knowledge and participate in teamwork.
- Co-operation between staff members is an integrated part of the working atmosphere at the University of South-Eastern Norway. The candidate must be motivated and demonstrate a proven ability to work effectively within a team and in a collegiate manner to formulate and realize common objectives
- Personal suitability for the post will be emphasized.
The successful applicant must be granted admission to the university’s doctoral program in Management within three months of assuming the position. A weighted average grade of B or higher is usually required for admission to the program.

Salary
PhD Research Fellow (code 1017): NOK 536 200 a year. Further promotion will be based on time served in the position. In special cases, employment in code 1378 may be considered.
A statutory contribution to the state pension plan will be deducted from the employee’s salary.
Other information
The Academic Appointments Board for PhD Research Fellowships is responsible for the appointment. An expert assessment of applicants will be carried out. The candidates deemed best qualified will be invited to an interview.
The person appointed must comply with the laws, regulations and agreements that apply at any given time to the post. Please note that approved work permit is a prerequisite for the employment.
