Are you passionate about maritime technology and human-centred design? Join us in the “Collaborative User-centred Engineering of Digital navigational tools” (CUED) project, where the Department of Design 100% position as a PhD candidate starting 01.01.2025. 

In the CUED project, we focus on enhancing maritime watch-keeping through the integration of human factors and advanced technology. This innovative research project investigates crucial questions at the intersection of human behaviour and digital technology in maritime navigation. We aim to understand how naturalistic decision-making, creeping normality, and confirmation bias affect navigational safety, and explore the design of digital tools like radar, AIS, ECDIS, and AI/ML systems to support and improve the decision-making processes of watch-keepers.

Our multidisciplinary approach combines literature reviews, surveys, interviews, co-design workshops, and proof-of-concept demonstrations to develop and validate user-centred digital solutions. Successful candidates will collaborate across various disciplines, including human factors, nautical operations, psychology, industrial design, and emerging technologies, working closely with experts from HVL and NTNU. The nature of the work is development-oriented and is funded by the Norwegian Research Council.

As a PhD candidate in CUED, you will actively contribute to various key activities within the project. These include conducting a literature study and interviewing seafarers, ship owners, builders, and operators. Additionally, you will participate in a design process to prototype new or improved solutions for watch-keepers, assess their usability, and determine their potential.

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree. 

The position’s working place is at the NTNU Shore Control Lab in Trondheim. Your immediate leader is the Head of Department.

Duties of the position

• Conducting high-quality research within the CUED project and reporting progress on a regular basis and in agreement with the supervisors
• Documenting the research findings in the form of scientific papers
• Presenting the research findings at internal project meetings and scientific conferences
• Undertaking the necessary courses (30 ECTS) as part of the PhD program in Design

Required selection criteria

• Have a relevant background in human factors, nautical operations, psychology, industrial design, applied or emerging technology, interaction design, human-computer interaction, or related fields.   
• Have completed at least five years of higher education that includes a master’s degree or other equivalent degree, where 120 credits have been obtained at a master's level. Master's students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented by September 10th. 
• Have a strong academic record and a weighted average for the last two years of your master's degree equivalent to a B or higher, according to the NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker result, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education. 
• Meet the requirements for admission to the doctoral program in design. 
• Have very good written and oral English language skills. Candidates from universities outside Scandinavia and English-speaking countries are requested to document English language proficiency: 
• TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test) 
• IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5  
• CAE/CPE: grade B or A 

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant 

Preferred selection criteria

• Experience with creating high-fidelity user interface prototypes
• Experience with conducting user research and evaluation studies
• Experience with analyzing quantitative and qualitative data
• Documented dissemination experience
• Connections to, and knowledge of, the maritime domain from earlier studies or experience. A particular focus on nautical operations and practice is an advantage
• Connections to, and knowledge of, the navigation equipment industry, from earlier studies or experience. A special focus on design practice in this domain is an advantage
• Good written and oral English and Norwegian language skills

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years 

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in design within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.
