About the job
We have a vacancy for a 3-year PhD position at the Department of Geosciences (IGP) at NTNU within the group Well and Reservoir (former Reservoir Engineering and Petrophysics). The position is funded by PoreLab. For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree. The position is within the Center of Excellence PoreLab, and organized under the Department of Geosciences.
The candidate is supervised by associate professor Antje van der Net in close collaboration with professors Alex Hansen and Carl Fredrik Berg.
The latest startup date is February 2025. Preferable startup date January 2025.
Your immediate leader is the head of department.
Duties of the position
- The area of interest is multiphase fluid flow description at pore level using pore scale imaging with a microCT scan.
- The objective of the PhD work is to describe multiphase fluid flow and preferential flow path in granular media using entropy as flow description for the purpose of prediction and quantification of spatial fluid distribution during different flow conditions and porous media characteristics.
- This shall be done using existing and/or newly developed experimental methods supported by respectively numerical, analytical and/or modelling tools.
Required selection criteria
- You must have a professionally relevant background in STEM, preferably related to fluid mechanics and transport in porous media. A strong background in thermodynamics is preferred as well as experimental experience in a fluid mechanics laboratory.
- Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level.
- You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
- Master's students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before start-up of the position.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant

- Good written and oral English. Norwegian language skills are advantageous but not required.

Salary and conditions
As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 years.
Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Engineering (Doctoral Programme – PhD – Faculty of Engineering Science – NTNU) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology.
