About the job

We have a vacancy for a PhD candidate at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in Project Management at the Project and Quality Management (PKL) Research Group. The focus of the research will be on project complexity.

Managing a project to a successful outcome is demanding and requires that managers and organizations establish structures, guidelines, incentives, execution models, and contracts that foster the collaboration. One of the most important factors that influence these choices are the complexity of the actual project. Project complexity has been studied for many years; however, there is a need to better understand from both a practitioner’s and an academic’s standpoint how different factors contribute to the complexity and how it best can be managed.

Your PhD will investigate how project managers and project organizations today evaluate the complexity of their projects, what actions/decisions they take to mitigate the complexity, and to what extent their efforts have had the desired effects on managing the complexity and the project outcome. Your contribution will, in other words, form a basis for future knowledge development on how to manage project complexity. The research should lead to a model/method/tool that can be applied by project practitioners.

As a part of your position, you will join a research group and an extended research environment at NTNU that is internationally recognized for our research and knowledge development within project management and project governance. You will be a part of a group of several other PhD candidates. The position requires you to live in Trondheim, as your contribution to and your contact with the joint research environment are important for your work.

You are expected to be an active and integrated part of the academic environment at the department and to participate in cooperation with several different industries in the private and public sectors. You are expected to obtain data from investment projects in both sectors, both in Norway and internationally. As a part of your work, you will also investigate public projects in the portfolio of Trondheim Municipality. Consequently, your work will focus on projects in all sizes, as complexity should be handled in small as well as large projects. It is desired that you have specific ideas and thoughts of the relevant topic for the doctoral research. You must include a brief description and proposal that indicates thoughts of research questions and methodology for the PhD research.

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

Your will report to Associate Professor, who will be your supervisor.
