About the job

A three-year PhD position in molecular biotechnology is available in the group of Prof. Johannes Kabisch at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway. 

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The PhD candidate will work as part of the SFI Industrial Biotechnology (SFI-IB). The SFI-IB is a research-based innovation centre lead by SINTEF Industry and funded by the Research Council of Norway. In the project we will research RNA modifying enzymes and their production. The PhD candidate will work on both the engineering of such enzymes as well as genetically optimizing microbial production hosts.

The project will happen in very tight collaboration with ArcticZymes AS and SINTEF, enabling the candidate to use respective infrastructure as well as expert supervision from the partners.

Duties of the position

  • Engineering and characterization of RNA modifying enzymes
  • Genetic engineering of microbial hosts for production of RNA modifying enzymes
  • Data analysis
  • Preparation of manuscripts and doctoral thesis
  • Presentation of results at group meetings and scientific conferences

Required selection criteria

Preferred selection criteria

  • Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in
    • handling RNA
    • biochemical characterization of enzymes
    • in vitro transcription/translation
    • microfluidics
    • RNA modifying enzymes
    • experience with data-analysis skills in e.g. Python

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Biotechnology  (PhD Programme in Biotechnology) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates.
