Design System Lead Designer

Role overview and purpose

As Design Lead in CatalystOne, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining a comprehensive design system that unifies the visual language, interaction patterns and layouts and across all digital products. This role requires a deep understanding of user-centered design principles, excellent communication skills, and a collaborative spirit to work with multiple cross-functional product teams, including product designers, developers, and product managers. The Design Lead will ensure consistency, scalability, and accessibility while continuously improving the product design language. You will work closely with the Tech Lead in the Design system team. 

The Design Lead will work from one of our Norwegian offices (Oslo, Drammen or Sandefjord), and will report to VP Product Design. The Design Lead will be part of the Design team and collaborate closely with all of the designers, and will be taking part in design critiques, meetups, sharing sessions, and social activities!

    Key responsibilities

    • Lead the strategy, development, and maintenance of CatalystOne’s design system, ensuring it meets the needs of our products and users.
    • Create comprehensive documentation for the design system, including component usage guidelines, design principles, and accessibility standards.
    • Ensure that style guides, components, patterns and layouts meet high standards for visual quality, usability, performance, responsiveness and accessibility (WCAG).
    • Collaborate closely with product designers, developers, and other stakeholders to define and implement design patterns, components, and documentation.
    • Establish governance and workflows for maintaining the design system, including versioning, documentation, and usage policies.
    • Implement and oversee a contribution model to streamline the process of multiple autonomous product teams building components in a scalable and reusable way.
    • Mentor and guide other designers in the team contributing to the design system. Promoting a culture of feedback and collaboration.
    • Track the adoption, usage and performance of the design system in order to continuously improving it, gathering feedback from product teams and end users.
    • Act as a champion of the design system, advocate for consistency, accessibility, and inclusivity in design across the organization.
    • Stay updated on industry trends, tools, and techniques to keep our design system up to date.
    • Serve as the main point of contact for design system-related queries and feedback.

    Key competencies for the role

    • Strong proficiency in Figma.
    • Deep knowledge of UI/UX design principles and interaction patterns.
    • Deep understanding of accessibility standards and best practices.
    • Familiarity with front-end development technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
    • Ability to clearly articulate design decisions and rationale, both to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    • Strong collaborative spirit with the ability to work cross-functionally and influence multiple teams.

    Desired experience: 5+ years of experience in digital product design and experience in leading the development of design systems.
